The Battle of Midway lasted 4 days. The battle started on June 3rd and ended on June 7th. Japan suffered heavy casuatlies, while America did not lose much.
Japan: Akagi (Red Castle) was an aircraft carrier, Hiryu (Flying Dragon) was also an aircraft carrier, Kaga was also an aircraft carrier, and Soryu (Blue or Green Dragon) was also an aircraft carrier. All four of these carriers were lost during the Battle of Midway. Japan also lost 94 out of 106 Mitsubishi A6M Zero's (long range fighter aircrafts), all 72 Aichi D3A Val (carrier dive bombers), and 81 out of 93 Nakajima B5N Kates (carrier torpedo bomber). Two light carriers, 280 planes, 7 battleships, 14 cruisers. America: Yorktown was an aircraft carrier, and was the only one to be sunk during the Battle of Midway. America also committed the aircraft carriers Hornet and Enterprise 8 cruisers and 16 destroyers. A total of 360 airplanes fought for the United States during the Battle of Midway. These planes consisted of TBF Avengers (Lost 5/6), F4F Wildcat (Lost 26/88), F2A Buffalo (Lost 13/21), SBD Dauntless (Lost 48/128), SB2U Vindicator (Lost 6/21), TBD Devastator (Lost 40/44), PBY Catalina (Lost 1/31), B-26 Marauder (Lost 2/4), and B-17 Flying Fortress (Lost 2/17) |
