Dear Mom and Dad,
As I am sure you have seen the newspaper about the battle of Midway. Yes I am okay. The battle was intense but after the confirmed hits on three of the 4 aircraft carriers, I was sure we were going to be all right. My friend died that I met at training. He was on the U.S.S. Yorktown, which sank in the battle. The Yorktown was already damaged by previous battles, so it was no surprise that it was the ship to go down. We demolished the Japanese Imperial Fleet in 4 days. Most of our planes survived, and didn’t take heavy damage. This is the first time in days I have been able to have a break other than sleeping and eating. I have been repairing the ship, and the planes. Captain says we are going on a new campaign called Guadalcanal. I hope this doesn’t start soon because I am looking forward to some well deserved rest. Love, Armando Hill Dear Mom and Dad,
Things on the ship have died down for now. It has been almost 3 weeks since anything interesting has happened. I now just read most of the time. Occasionally, I have to check up on the planes and the ships machinery. Other than that, life on the ship is pretty boring. My friends and I are playing cards in humid like weather. Days like this can make a man go stir crazy. Thank goodness for my friends. Love, Armando Hill Dear Mom and Dad,
Working aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise is tough. All the time I am running around the deck keeping the ship in tip-top shape. Usually whenever I am not working on repairs, I am eating or sleeping. But if I do get leisure time, I go down into the ship’s library. I am currently reading 1984. Some of the weather that hits our ship is devastating. It can do so much damage to the ship that my buddies and I have to repair. Love, Armando Hill |
